Here it is: My dream apartment at 1942 SE Ladd.
Here's what the FOR RENT sign says:

One bedroom unit at 1942 SE Ladd (facing street to your right), totally restored with french doors, hardwood floors, period details, tile bath, natural fir cabinets in kitchen, new plumbing and wiring, gas range and heat, laundry facilities, bicycle storage, big courtyard, and this great location. Non smoking, pets with approval only. $995 per month, $1250 security. Month to month rental.

I've been watching this place since I moved to the neighborhood in early 2000, back when it was $550/mo. I think they remodeled it in 2007 or 2008 or so. If I lived there, I'd have those french doors open all summer long and have dinner parties with interesting people that drink pernod and fernet branca. I would sit in on Anthropology classes at Reed and go to strip clubs "ironically" instead of normally. I would smoke filterless Nat Sherman Lights and drive a Karmann Ghia. I would take up unicycling and vacation in places that have a swim-up bar and always vote for whomever was running under the Pacific Green Party. My girlfriend would have one of those names that sound like a normal name but is spelled funny, like Malyssa or Gessyka or Dyan. I would care about things--like Muscular Dystrophy or Ovarian Cancer--or at least pretend to. I would make my own shampoo out of comfrey leaves and rosemary. Yup, I'd be a real catch, I would.

The good news is that Brittany Forest is the best looking building in the 39th and Powell area.
The bad news is that they want $100 more than anyone else in the neighborhood.
The other bad news is that "Original Taco House" is neither Original, Taco, or House.

Cute courtyard. For $850/mo I hope I don't have an upstairs neighbor. I kinda like these places that were built just after the second world war. But lately I've become convinced that any sort of landscaping that doesn't bear something edible is useless. Of course, the last thing a landlord wants to do is pick up rotten peaches every September. Reliance Property Management can be reached at 503.244.1359. Even if you don't want the apartment, call them and tell them that the courtyard of that place needs a big fat cherry tree right in the middle.

View Larger MapThis place is having an open house on Sunday from noon to 3 according to this craigslist ad. Open houses are a nightmare for landlord and tenant both. It sucks for you because by the time you get there at 15 minutes before the scheduled open house, there are already 5-6 people waiting at the front door. Curiously, that's why it sucks for me too. We legally have to take the first qualified applicant. My advice to you would be to not give them your application fee unless you know that you're first in line, because who wants to waste $40?
I had an open house for a studio yesterday from 4pm to 6pm, and the place was rented by 3:15. Depending on the landlord, maybe you can call them up and ask to see it a day or an hour early. Bring a bribe. Some landlords REALLY like two 22-ounce bottles of hard-to-find Full Sail varieties from Belmont Station. Just sayin'.

Grace Villa Apartments

I can't find anything online about the Grace Villa Apartments, other than it was built in 1948. They have their "now renting" sign out this morning, and it looks like they have a one-bedroom coming up. I called one of the phone numbers on the sign, but got a commercial cooling warehouse or something.
I don't know what you call this architecturally, but I really like the corner windows because it looks like they allow for a lot of light. It's very rare that a post-WWII building appeals to me, so this is quite the anomaly for the neighborhood. Looks like they replaced the windows a few years ago with those high-efficiency vinyl ones, and I'm assuming the heat is electric. This place is right across the street from Col. Summers Park. It's at 1636 SE Taylor, and their number might be 503-654-4150. UPDATE 6/15/07: Kimberly has more info in the comments.
